Commander Deck Tech — Five Colors, One Very Large Problem
Format: Commander / EDH | Featured Card: The Ur-Dragon
EDHREC Rank #6 this month — 4,484 decks built | ~$1,900 optimized build (see budget notes for swaps)
Overview
The Ur-Dragon has been climbing the EDHREC trending charts for weeks, and it’s easy to see why — this is the platonic ideal of a five-color tribal payoff. Every Dragon you cast is cheaper while the Ur-Dragon is around, and every time your Dragons swing as a group you draw a card and mill a card off the top for each one. Attack with five Dragons, draw five cards. It’s not subtle.
This build leans hard into the ‘go big or go bigger’ fantasy: a critical mass of Dragon creatures backed by a wildly overqualified mana base of five-color fixing (Command Tower, Exotic Orchard, Haven of the Spirit Dragon) and enough ramp to make sure you hit your colors on curve.
The deck doesn’t just want to win with combat damage — Game Changers like Cyclonic Rift and Vampiric Tutor keep you ahead on resources so you can rebuild after a board wipe and still have a hand full of Dragons to slam back down.

Strategy Guide
Early Game (Turns 1-4)
- Your job before turn 5 is fixing and ramp — get Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, and your five-color lands online before anything else.
- Herald’s Horn and Urza’s Incubator are best cast as early as possible; naming ‘Dragon’ turns every draw step into a discount on your top end.
- Hold interaction like Swords to Plowshares for anything that threatens to run away with the game before you’re set up.
Mid Game (Turns 5-8)
- Start deploying Dragons behind Heroic Intervention or Teferi’s Protection mana if you suspect a board wipe is coming.
- The Ur-Dragon itself is a house on the battlefield or in the command zone — Eminence means every other Dragon gets cheaper the moment it’s cast, even from hand.
- Dragon Tempest and Rhythm of the Wild turn every Dragon into a haste threat with extra damage — look to chain them together for a haymaker turn.
Late Game (Turns 9+)
- Attack with The Ur-Dragon plus any other Dragons for a massive card-draw swing — the more Dragons connect, the more cards you draw and mill.
- Cyclonic Rift overloaded is your reset button if you fall behind on board; you have more top-end to redeploy than anyone else at the table.
- Demonic Tutor and Vampiric Tutor find whatever answer or finisher the game state calls for — use them to close, not just to stabilize.
Win Conditions & Key Interactions
- The Ur-Dragon draw engine — Attacking with a critical mass of Dragons draws (and mills) a card for each one — three or four Dragons connecting refills your hand instantly.
- Scourge of the Throne + extra combats — An additional combat step after attacking with a Dragon effectively doubles your damage and draw for the turn.
- Morophon, the Boundless — Naming Dragon turns Morophon into a second Ur-Dragon-style cost reducer and makes every Dragon in your deck a free-cast threat off the top.
Budget Notes
Premium build: ~$1,900 for the optimized build with premium interaction, painless fixing lands, and the full Game Changer suite.
- Mana Confluence / City of Brass → Command Tower + basics: Painless fixing at a fraction of the cost — you lose a little speed but the deck can afford to be patient.
- Cyclonic Rift → Blasphemous Act (extra copy) or Crux of Fate: A cheaper sweeper still resets the board; you lose the one-sided mode but keep the effect.
- Demonic Tutor / Vampiric Tutor → Dragonstorm Globe or any 2-mana Dragon tutor effect: Slower to find your piece but keeps the tutor plan alive for a fraction of the price.
- Mox Jasper → Any basic mana rock (Mind Stone, Guardian Idol): You lose the free-spell upside but keep the ramp on curve.
- Ancient Copper Dragon / Ancient Silver Dragon → Budget Dragons like Bladewing the Risen or Broodmate Dragon (extra copy of effect): Keeps the Dragon count high without the premium price tag on the rarer mythics.
