Gen Con is the biggest tabletop gathering in North America, and this year, Sorcery: Contested Realm showed up with its biggest presence yet: two Grand Contest Championships in a single weekend. Then Mother Nature decided to get involved.
New to Sorcery? It’s a trading card game built around genuinely hand-painted artwork instead of digital renders, where every deck is led by an Avatar, built from a 60-card Spellbook and a 30-card Atlas of land-like resource cards called Sites. If you’ve never seen a pack opened at a table full of strangers who all gasp at the same painting, this is the game that does that.
Storms, a Leaky Roof, and a Tornado Warning
Gen Con 2026 ran July 30 through August 2 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, and Saturday, August 1 threw everything at it. Heavy rain overwhelmed the 54-year-old building’s roof, with the worst leaking hitting the play-test hall as staff scrambled with trash bins to keep the water off the tables. Partway through, a tornado warning went into effect for Marion County, and attendees were pulled away from windows and exterior rooms for a few tense hours.
Sorcery’s own Grand Contest finals got caught in the middle of it, forced into what the game’s publisher, Erik’s Curiosa, later called “an unexpected off-site adventure” just to finish the matches. Convention organizers kept the doors open and the event carried on into Sunday. The realm, as it turns out, is hard to cancel.
Two Championships, One Weekend
Weather aside, this was the first time Sorcery ran both its Constructed and Limited Grand Contest Championships at the same Gen Con — two of the defining events of the 2026 Organized Play season, drawing Sorcerers from around the world to Booth #3046 and beyond. Prizing leaned into the moment: every participant walked away with an alt-art Croaking Swamp, top finishers earned Silver Bullet cards (foil versions for every 32 players in the bracket), and each champion took home an Uncut Gothic Print sheet. True to the community-first spirit of the event, one random participant at each Championship also won an Uncut Gothic sheet, win or lose.
Beyond the two title events, the convention ran a full slate of Limited formats — Escalation Sealed, Team Sealed, and the newcomer-friendly Learn-to-Play program, which reportedly welcomed more than 300 brand-new players into the realm over the four days.
The Artists Made It Worth the Trip
Even with the weather, the artist signings were a highlight of the weekend. Fantasy painter Drew Tucker, a longtime Sorcery contributor, debuted an exclusive Gen Con print of Remulus Immortals, an original piece inspired by the historical Persian Immortals that Tucker described as capturing the quiet tension of “waiting to crush somebody” rather than the battle itself.
Alongside him, Alan Pollack made his first Gen Con appearance in more than two decades, bringing a print of Bearserker — his hand-painted take on a Viking shapeshifter for the upcoming Frost Mage vs. Lavamancer preconstructed decks, arriving November 14. Pollack built the piece around a single confident silhouette and a deliberately muted, icy palette, calling it a spiritual successor to fan-favorite Moon Clan Werewolf. Every dollar from both exclusive prints went straight to the artists.
Saturday night’s Casual Play & Trade session — free boosters just for showing up, plus a stack of door prizes — closed out the weekend as the community gathering it’s meant to be, tornado warning and all.
What This Means Going Forward
Running two Grand Contest Championships at one convention is a signal that Sorcery’s Organized Play season is scaling up fast, and the November arrival of Frost Mage vs. Lavamancer gives both new and experienced players a fresh on-ramp into deckbuilding. If Gen Con is any indication, this is a game whose community shows up rain or shine — literally.
