Two big Flesh and Blood headlines are colliding this week, and if you have ever been curious about the game, this is the moment to jump in. Legend Story Studios just revealed Usurp the Shadow Throne, the 20th booster set in the game’s seven-year history, and tomorrow, August 21, registration opens for the Flesh and Blood World Championship in Paris — a $300,000 prize pool event happening November 5–8. Flesh and Blood is a hero-led trading card game: instead of building around a color identity or faction, every deck is built around a single Hero card that defines your class, your starting life total, and the shape of your strategy. Resources come from pitching cards from your hand face-down for value, which fuels the game’s signature fast, combat-heavy turns. You’ll see two main ways to play: Classic Constructed, where you build a 60-card deck around your Hero ahead of time, and Booster Draft, where you draft your deck on the spot from packs at the table. If those terms are new to you, don’t worry — every set is designed to be picked up in an afternoon.
Usurp the Shadow Throne: a milestone set built around three Shadow icons
Confirmed across Legend Story Studios’ own previews and outlets like Star City Games and ICv2, Usurp the Shadow Throne is a 263-card set (2 Fabled, 27 Marvel, 5 Legendary, 40 Majestic, 66 Rare, 133 Common, 16 Basic) built for Booster Draft, Sealed Deck, and Constructed play. Rather than introduce a brand-new class from scratch, LSS used its 20th set to bring back three of the game’s most requested Shadow-class heroes at once:
- Viserai returns as Flesh and Blood’s first-ever dual-face hero. He starts the game as Viserai, the Forsaken and transforms into Viserai, Usurper once a player creates three or more Runechants in a single turn — a genuinely new hero format for the game, not just a fresh coat of paint on an old mechanic.
- Malice is a Shadow Necromancer who commands an army of corrupted zombies, and she gets her own standalone Armory Deck, releasing September 18 — a week ahead of the main set — built specifically for Classic Constructed play at weekly Armory Events.
- Levia, the Shadow Brute fan favorite, returns with a more aggressive, ravenous framing after consuming the demon Blasmophet.
For deckbuilders who’ve drifted away from Flesh and Blood or never quite gotten into it, a milestone set reviving three fan-favorite Shadow characters — plus a mechanically new hero format in Viserai — is a legitimate jumping-back-in point. Usurp the Shadow Throne releases worldwide on September 25, with the Armory Deck: Malice landing one week earlier on September 18.
World Championship: Paris registration opens tomorrow
The other half of this week’s news: registration for invited players to the Flesh and Blood World Championship: Paris opens tomorrow, August 21. From November 5–8, players from more than 50 countries will gather at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles to compete across Booster Draft and Classic Constructed formats for a $300,000 USD prize pool, Pro Tour Invitations for the Top 32, Gold Foil prize cards for the Top 8, and a one-of-a-kind World Champion card for the winner. Players qualify through National Championships, World Championship Qualifiers, or by ranking on the Global World Tour Leaderboard. Running alongside the main event, The Calling: Paris is an open-entry side event on November 7–8 in Classic Constructed format, giving any player a shot at a $25,000 prize pool without needing an invite.
It’s a fitting way to close out the year for a game celebrating its 20th set — a huge global stage the same autumn the Shadow throne gets contested on the card table too.
