Dimir Midrange has quietly become the deck to beat on the Standard ladder this week. Built around Kaito, Bane of Nightmares, it plays like a classic flash-tempo shell: cheap, evasive threats like Dream Beavers and Spyglass Siren apply early pressure while a dense package of flash creatures — Floodpits Drowner, Tishana’s Tidebinder, The Wondrous Wasp, and Wan Shi Tong, Librarian — let you hold up mana and ambush opponents on their own turn. Kaito ninjutsus in for a discount, flips into a hexproof 3/4 beater, and closes games your opponent can’t interact with.

Strategy Guide
Early Game (Turns 1–3): Sequence your one- and two-mana threats — Dream Beavers, Spyglass Siren, Floodpits Drowner — while keeping Spell Pierce or Spell Snare available. Floodpits Drowner is at its best flashed in as a surprise blocker, tapping down and stunning an opposing creature. Don’t overextend into sweepers; this deck wins on card quality and evasion, not board width.
Mid Game (Turns 4–6): This is where Kaito shines. Attack with an evasive flier, then ninjutsu Kaito in for a discount instead of hard-casting him. He immediately becomes a hexproof 3/4 during your turn, so removal-light opponents can’t easily answer him. Use Requiting Hex and Bitter Triumph to clear blockers or planeswalkers, and hold up Tishana’s Tidebinder or We Say Thee Nay! to blank an opposing haymaker at instant speed.
Late Game (Turn 7+): Enduring Curiosity turns any combat damage into a card, so a single unblocked attacker can bury the opponent in resources. Wan Shi Tong, Librarian scales with X and punishes fetch/search-heavy decks. From here, Kaito’s emblem and a wide flier suite usually close the game within a couple of attack steps.
Win Conditions & Key Interactions
- Kaito, Bane of Nightmares — ninjutsu in cheaply, flip to a hexproof 3/4 during your turn, grind out emblem value.
- Evasive fliers (Dream Beavers, Spyglass Siren) enable Kaito’s ninjutsu and chip in unblocked damage.
- Enduring Curiosity — converts combat damage into cards, snowballing advantage.
- Wan Shi Tong, Librarian — scalable flash flier that punishes library searches.
- Floodpits Drowner + Tishana’s Tidebinder — flash-speed tempo plays that stun or strip abilities from key threats.
Sideboard Guide
vs. Control/Slow decks: Duress strips removal or counterspells early. Strategic Betrayal and Disdainful Stroke fight through their interaction.
vs. Combo/Other Blue decks: Annul and Flashfreeze are precise, cheap answers. We Say Thee Nay! already helps here maindeck.
vs. Aggro: Raven Eagle adds a flying blocker and reach; The Ooze trades favorably on the ground. Prioritize Floodpits Drowner and Shoot the Sheriff.
vs. Graveyard strategies: Duress and Strategic Betrayal can strip key reanimation targets before they land.
Budget Notes
This exact 75 runs roughly $260–270 at tabletop retail, driven mostly by the surveil/dual land package and a full playset of Kaito. Budget swaps:
- Swap Watery Grave for a basic Swamp or Island — the low curve absorbs the fixing loss.
- Restless Reef and Soulstone Sanctuary → basic Islands for a cheaper, slightly slower manabase.
- Tishana’s Tidebinder (borderless) is a cosmetic premium — the standard frame version is identical on Arena.
- Trim to 2–3 copies of Kaito and add extra Requiting Hex or a cheap counterspell instead.
- Cut Wan Shi Tong, Librarian entirely for a budget build — add a second The Wondrous Wasp instead.
