Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk arrived in The Hobbit Eternal last month and went straight into the top five most-built commanders in Magic — over five thousand decks and still climbing. That is not hype. It is because Thorin does two things Boros has spent a decade asking for, on the same five-mana body.
Job one: every Dwarf you control that enters the battlefield makes a Treasure token. Not just Thorin — every Dwarf, every time. Your tribal board is also your ramp package, and the mana you spend deploying threats partially refunds itself.
Job two: other Dwarves you control get +1/+0 for each artifact token you control. Read that wording again — artifact token, not Treasure. Clues, Food, Powerstones, Blood, and Junk all count. A board of three Dwarves and five Treasures is not three small creatures; it is three creatures swinging five points bigger apiece.
The tension is the whole game. Every Treasure you crack for mana is a Treasure that stops pumping your team. This deck is built around making that decision well, every single turn.

Strategy Guide
Turns 1–3 — Cheap Dwarves, Real Mana
You are not durdling; Boros does not get to durdle. Lead on one- and two-drop Dwarves — Bofur, Reliable Guardian, Dáin, Lord of the Iron Hills, Giott, King of the Dwarves, Thorin Oakenshield, Magda, Brazen Outlaw — and get a body on board before Thorin ever shows up.
- Sol Ring and the signets exist to deploy Thorin on turn three or four, not turn five.
- Magda, Brazen Outlaw is the best turn-two play in the deck. She makes Treasure off Dwarf counters and turns five Treasures into any artifact or Dragon from your library.
- Iron Hills Blacksmith and Kíli the Resourceful are cheap tribal filler that raise the ceiling on the Thorin turn.
Turns 4–6 — Land Thorin, Then Never Stop Casting Dwarves
The moment Thorin resolves, every subsequent Dwarf is a two-for-one: a body, plus a Treasure, plus a team-wide pump. This is the window where the deck goes from fair to genuinely frightening.
- Protect him first. Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots are the difference between a swing and a sorcery-speed concession.
- Academy Manufactor is the biggest non-commander swing. Every Treasure becomes a Treasure, a Clue, and a Food — three artifact tokens instead of one, so Thorin’s anthem triples.
- Xorn does the same trick a different way: every Treasure you would make, you make one extra.
- Anointed Procession doubles everything you produce, tokens and Treasures alike.
Turns 7+ — Convert or Get Ground Out
Boros has no late-game card advantage engine to fall back on. If the board stalls, you lose. So the back half of the curve is deliberately explosive rather than grindy.
- Brass’s Bounty on a seven-land board is seven Treasures — a +7/+0 anthem for the whole Dwarf team, before you spend a single one.
- Shared Animosity on a wide Dwarf board is frequently just lethal; it stacks multiplicatively with the Thorin anthem.
- Akroma’s Will hands the team double strike and protection in one card.
- Rain of Riches gives your spells cascade whenever you crack a Treasure, which is how a stalled board suddenly produces three free spells.
Win Conditions and Key Interactions
| Line | How it wins |
|---|---|
| The default kill | A wide Dwarf board plus a pile of untapped Treasures. Thorin’s anthem scales with token count, so you frequently attack for 30+ without ever tapping a Treasure for mana. |
| Shared Animosity | Each attacking Dwarf gets +1/+0 for every other attacking Dwarf. Six Dwarves means +5/+0 each on top of the Thorin bonus — the primary out-of-nowhere kill. |
| Academy Manufactor + Anointed Procession | One Dwarf entering makes six artifact tokens. Thorin’s anthem jumps by six. Two Dwarves in a turn ends most games. |
| Magda, Brazen Outlaw | Sacrifice five Treasures at instant speed to put Goldspan Dragon or The Reaver Cleaver straight onto the battlefield. Free, uncounterable, instant speed. |
| Goldspan Dragon | Treasures tap for two. With Rain of Riches that is a cascade engine and a mana engine on a 4/4 flier. |
| Professional Face-Breaker | Turns combat damage into Treasures and Treasures into cards — the closest thing Boros gets to real card advantage. |
| Blasphemous Act | Your escape hatch. Dwarves survive it more often than you would think once the anthem is online, and Treasures never die to a board wipe. |
Budget Notes
The list as written runs roughly $520 at current market, and most of that sits in six cards. Every one has a functional replacement that costs a rounding error. Swap all six and you land near $260 without changing how the deck actually plays.
| Premium card | Functional swap |
|---|---|
| Deflecting Swat (~$71) | → Rebuff the Wicked (~$0.50). Cheaper protection for Thorin. You lose the free cast; you keep the effect. |
| Anointed Procession (~$58) | → Idol of Oblivion (~$0.50). Draw instead of doubling, but it solves the real problem — running out of gas. |
| Cavern of Souls (~$50) | → Unclaimed Territory (~$0.30). Same tribal fixing, minus the uncounterable clause. |
| Gleaming Splendor (~$44) | → Blacksmith’s Talent (~$0.50). Artifact and equipment payoff that grows over time instead of one burst. |
| The Reaver Cleaver (~$32) | → Bloodforged Battle-Axe (~$1). Copies itself on combat damage — more artifact tokens is the point anyway. |
| Akroma’s Will (~$15) | → Unbreakable Formation (~$0.50). Keeps the anti-wrath mode and the pump; drops the double strike finish. |
Going the other way? Smothering Tithe and Jeska’s Will are the highest-impact upgrades, and both slot in without touching the shell.
Wrapping Up
Thorin rewards the thing Boros decks usually cannot do — play a long game — by making your board wider and your mana deeper at the same time. Build it, jam it, and pay attention to how often the correct play is not cracking the Treasure.
