Mono-Black Life-as-Resource Combo | Commander (EDH) Deck Tech | September 2026
Overview
K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth is the most honest card in Commander. He does not hide behind a clever ability word or a stack of triggers. He simply says: your life total is mana now. For each {B} in a cost, pay 2 life instead. Every black spell in your deck gets a second, life-denominated price tag, and suddenly a hand full of uncastable haymakers turns into a turn-four kill.
That is why K'rrik has quietly climbed back into EDHREC's trending top 100 this month. He is a mono-black commander who converts the one resource nobody at the table can interact with — your life total — into raw, uncounterable acceleration. Torment of Hailfire for eleven is not a dream. It is Tuesday.
The build below is a life-as-resource combo deck with three overlapping engines: ritual-and-tutor acceleration to deploy K'rrik early, life-gain payoffs that refill the tank so the engine never stalls, and two clean two-card loops that end the game outright. It is mono-black, so the mana is trivially consistent, and it leans on Cabal Coffers and Nykthos to turn a wide swamp base into double-digit mana.
The core tension is the fun part. K'rrik costs 4 generic and three Phyrexian black — so you can cast him for {4} and six life on turn three off a single ritual. That is an 8-life investment before you have gained a point back. Every game of K'rrik is a negotiation with your own life total, and learning where the floor is separates a deck that wins on turn six from a deck that kills itself on turn four.
K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth {4}{B/P}{B/P}{B/P}
Legendary Creature — Phyrexian Horror Minion — 2/2({B/P} can be paid with either {B} or 2 life.)
Lifelink
For each {B} in a cost, you may pay 2 life rather than pay that mana.
Whenever you cast a black spell, put a +1/+1 counter on K’rrik.

Strategy Guide
Early Game (Turns 1-3): Get Him Down, Cheap
- Your opening priority is land, fast rock, K'rrik. Sol Ring, Jet Medallion, Lotus Petal, Charcoal Diamond-tier rocks, and the ritual package (Dark Ritual, Cabal Ritual, Culling the Weak, Rain of Filth) all exist to make a turn-two or turn-three K'rrik real.
- Remember the math: K'rrik costs {4}{B/P}{B/P}{B/P}. With Sol Ring plus two lands you have 4 mana on turn two — pay 6 life and he lands. You are at 34 with a 2/2 lifelinker that makes your whole deck cheaper. That is a fine trade.
- Do not tutor for a win condition yet. Tutor for acceleration or protection. Lightning Greaves is a genuinely great turn-one play here because a resolved-and-hasty K'rrik immediately starts growing and immediately starts gaining life back.
Mid Game (Turns 4-6): The Engine Turns Over
- Once K'rrik is down, black costs become life costs and your hand empties fast. This is where the life-gain half of the deck earns its slot. Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose, Blood Artist, Ayara, and K'rrik's own lifelink all push your total back up while you spend it.
- Bolas's Citadel is the single best card in the deck at this stage. Citadel lets you cast off the top of your library for life, K'rrik lets you cast black spells for life, and the two stack — you are drawing and deploying your deck with a resource you can regenerate. A Citadel turn with a Gray Merchant or Aetherflux Reservoir on board is frequently lethal.
- Keep Cabal Coffers and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx in mind. Coffers with six swamps out is 6 extra black mana, which K'rrik makes partially redundant — but redundancy is exactly what you want when a single Swords to Plowshares would otherwise turn your whole deck off.
Late Game (Turn 7+): Close It or Lose It
- K'rrik decks do not grind. Your life total is a clock that only moves one direction unless you are actively gaining, so long games favor every other deck at the table. Identify your line and take it.
- The default kill is Torment of Hailfire or Exsanguinate for a huge X off Coffers plus Nykthos plus life payment. Exsanguinate also gains you the life back, which means a failed lethal attempt often still stabilizes you.
- If the table has stabilized behind lifegain or fog effects, pivot to the combo lines below. Necrotic Ooze plus Blood Celebrant and Skirge Familiar is an infinite mana loop that does not care how much life your opponents have.
Win Conditions & Combos
Aetherflux Reservoir + K'rrik storm — Cast black spells for life, gain 1 per spell cast that turn (triangular, so the 6th spell gains 6), then pay 50 life to snipe a player. With K'rrik making spells free in mana terms, a modest 8-10 spell turn crosses 50 life comfortably. Repeat per opponent.
Necrotic Ooze + Blood Celebrant + Skirge Familiar — Get both creatures into the graveyard (Buried Alive, Entomb, Dimir House Guard's transmute, or just chump-blocking). Ooze has both activated abilities: Celebrant makes any color of mana for 1 life, Familiar discards a card for {B}. Loop with a free discard outlet or Bolas's Citadel on top for infinite black mana, then Exsanguinate for the table.
Sanguine Bond + Exquisite Blood — The classic mono-black two-card loop. Any life you gain drains an opponent, which gains you life, which drains again — infinite. K'rrik's lifelink and Gray Merchant both start the chain. Both halves are individually useful here, which is why the combo stays in the 99 instead of being a dead draw.
Torment of Hailfire / Exsanguinate for X — The fair-ish kill. Coffers plus Cabal Stronghold plus Nykthos plus life-paid black pips regularly gets X to 10+. Hailfire at 10 is game over against three opponents in almost every board state.
Peer into the Abyss + Bolas's Citadel — Draw half your library, then cast it off the top with Citadel paying life while K'rrik discounts everything black. This is the 'I have 40 life and nothing to do with it' button.
Budget Notes
The list above is the no-compromise build — Scryfall's cheapest available printings put it at roughly $4,050, and almost all of that is five cards: Mox Diamond, City of Traitors, Grim Monolith, Yawgmoth's Will, and Chrome Mox. The good news is that K'rrik is a commander whose engine lives in cheap cards. The expensive slots are pure acceleration, and acceleration is the most replaceable part of a deck that already turns life into mana. Swap the five below and the deck comes in near $2,050; run the full swap list in the .docx and you are at roughly $635 with the same kill lines intact.
| Cut | Price | Replace With | Price | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mox Diamond | $1,145 | Charcoal Diamond | $0.26 | A turn slower, but it still taps for the black mana K'rrik wants and costs 0.02% as much. The deck has enough ritual redundancy to absorb the tempo loss. |
| City of Traitors | $539 | Peat Bog | $1.13 | Peat Bog is the budget burst land of choice here — three black mana across two turns is exactly the shape a K'rrik ramp turn needs. |
| Grim Monolith | $483 | Everflowing Chalice | $0.28 | Chalice at two counters is 2 mana on a permanent that does not need untapping tricks. Slower ceiling, identical function on the key turn. |
| Yawgmoth's Will | $247 | Exhume | $3.71 | You lose the storm-recursion ceiling but keep the graveyard-as-resource plan. Exhume also enables the Necrotic Ooze line by putting bodies back on the battlefield. |
| Chrome Mox | $154 | Mind Stone | $0.24 | Mind Stone costs one more and cashes in for a card later. In a deck that is already paying life for speed, the free-but-card-negative Mox is the easiest cut. |
Going all the way down: the full swap list — Mox Diamond → Charcoal Diamond, City of Traitors → Peat Bog, Grim Monolith → Everflowing Chalice, Yawgmoth’s Will → Exhume, Chrome Mox → Mind Stone, Lake of the Dead → Myriad Landscape, The One Ring → Read the Bones, Mana Vault → Fellwar Stone, Mox Amber → Charcoal Diamond, Ancient Tomb → Swamp, Sheoldred → Sangromancer, Orcish Bowmasters → Marauding Blight-Priest, Urborg → Swamp, Nykthos → Swamp, Vampiric Tutor → Read the Bones, Exquisite Blood → Whip of Erebos, Bloodthirsty Conqueror → Defile — brings the build in around $635 with every kill line still live.
The 60-Second Version
Hook: This commander lets you pay LIFE instead of mana. Your life total is now a resource — and I built a deck that abuses it.
- K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth — Every black mana symbol in your deck now has a second price tag: 2 life. That's the whole deck.
- Bolas's Citadel — Cast off the top of your library for life. Stack it with K'rrik and you're deploying your entire deck in one turn.
- Aetherflux Reservoir — Every spell gains you life. Hit 50 and pay it to delete a player. K'rrik makes the spells basically free.
- Necrotic Ooze — Blood Celebrant and Skirge Familiar in the yard means Ooze has infinite black mana. That's the combo kill.
- Torment of Hailfire — X equals however much life you're willing to spend. Hailfire for eleven ends games.
Wrapping Up
K’rrik rewards players who are comfortable being uncomfortable. If you can hold your nerve at 12 life with a Bolas’s Citadel on the battlefield, this deck will win games nothing else in mono-black can. If you flinch, it kills you. That’s the deal, and honestly that’s the appeal.
