Format: Commander (EDH) · Colors: Abzan (W/B/G) · Commanders: Frodo, Adventurous Hobbit + Sam, Loyal Attendant · Est. build cost: ~$850–900 (budget version ~$250–300)
Overview
Every so often a partner pair shows up that reads like two harmless little cards and plays like a value engine with a countdown timer attached. Frodo, Adventurous Hobbit and Sam, Loyal Attendant are exactly that. Sam makes a Food at the beginning of combat on your turn and makes every Food ability cheaper to activate. Frodo turns lifegain into the Ring tempting you, and once the Ring has tempted you twice, every attack he makes also draws a card. Put them together in Abzan and you get a deck that never runs out of gas, never runs out of life, and eventually converts both into a table-wide drain.
The important thing to understand up front is that this is not a Food deck the way older Food decks were Food decks. You are not durdling toward a big Cauldron Familiar loop and hoping nobody notices — though that loop is absolutely in here. You are using Food as a renewable resource that pays you three different ways: it gains life, which turns on Frodo; it is an artifact, which turns on sacrifice payoffs; and it is a permanent hitting the battlefield, which turns on token doublers and Caretaker’s Talent.
Sam is the engine and Frodo is the payoff. Sam alone gives you a Food every combat for free, forever, and cuts the activation cost from two mana to one. That means a single untapped land converts into three life every turn cycle without spending a card. Three life is the exact number Frodo asks for. So the baseline loop — cast Sam, cast Frodo, attack, crack a Food — is a two-card engine that tempts the Ring every turn and starts drawing you cards on turn two of the sequence.
The Ring tempting you matters more than it looks. Your Ring-bearer gains ‘this creature can’t be blocked by creatures with greater power’ at level one, which on a two-mana Halfling means Frodo connects basically forever. Level two makes your Ring-bearer’s attacks force a sacrifice from the defending player. By the time the Ring has tempted you three or four times, Frodo is an unblockable, vigilant, card-drawing edict engine that costs you nothing to maintain. Opponents who are used to ignoring small creatures find out too late.
Where the deck actually wins is the drain package. Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose and Sorin of House Markov convert your lifegain into everyone else’s life loss. Exquisite Blood plus Sanguine Bond is a hard loop that ends the game on the spot. Marionette Master and Marionette Apprentice-style effects turn each sacrificed Food into damage. Mirkwood Bats and Nadier’s Nightblade punish every token that enters or leaves. You have four or five independent ways to close, which is exactly what you want in a deck whose primary job is to accumulate resources.
Mana is straightforward Abzan good-stuff: Delighted Halfling and Birds of Paradise on one, Gilded Goose doubling as a Food producer, then Nature’s Lore, Three Visits, and Cultivate to fix. Twenty-three nonbasic lands including the full Abzan shock/fetch/slow suite plus Indatha Triome keeps color requirements honest. The Shire is a free include that produces all three of your colors when you control a Halfling — which you almost always do.
Interaction is white-and-black premium removal: Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile, Anguished Unmaking, Go for the Throat, and Mortify handle any single problem permanent. Toxic Deluge and Farewell are your reset buttons, and yes, you can rebuild faster than anyone else at the table because Sam starts making Food again the very next combat.

Strategy Guide
Early Game (Turns 1–3)
- Prioritize a turn-one mana creature. Delighted Halfling and Birds of Paradise both accelerate you to a turn-two Sam, and Halfling additionally makes your legendary spells uncounterable, which is real in a deck this dependent on two specific legends.
- Cast Sam before Frodo if you have the choice. Sam’s partner trigger tutors Frodo directly to your hand, so leading on Sam is functionally a two-for-one and protects you from Frodo being stranded at the bottom of your library.
- Do not over-commit. Sam is a two-mana 2/3 body that opponents will happily spot-remove if you make him look important. Cheap ramp and a land drop is a completely fine turn three.
- Gilded Goose deserves a special mention — it ramps, it makes a Food immediately, and it converts your extra mana into more Food later. It is quietly one of the best turn-one plays in the deck.
Mid Game (Turns 4–7)
- This is where the engine assembles. You want Sam plus one of the Food payoffs down: Trail of Crumbs, Academy Manufactor, Gyome Master Chef, or Savvy Hunter. Each one converts the free Food into a second resource.
- Attack with Frodo every turn you can. Vigilance means attacking costs you nothing defensively, and the Ring escalates whether or not the attack connects — the trigger only needs Frodo attacking and three life gained.
- Academy Manufactor is the single biggest mana multiplier in the deck. With it out, every Food trigger also makes a Clue and a Treasure. That is card draw and ramp attached to a trigger you were getting for free anyway.
- Trail of Crumbs is your grindiest engine. Sacrifice a Food, look at the top two, take a permanent. With Sam’s cost reduction, that is one mana for a card, repeatable, at instant speed on your own turn.
- Deploy a doubler when you can afford it. Anointed Procession, Parallel Lives, and Mondrak, Glory Dominus each turn one Food a turn into two, which doubles your lifegain, your sacrifice fodder, and your Caretaker’s Talent counters.
- Hold interaction for the things that actually beat you: a graveyard hate piece against your Cauldron Familiar loop, an artifact wipe against your Food, or a stax piece that taxes your activations.
Late Game (Turns 8+)
- By now you should be well ahead on life total and cards. The question is which of your four closers is closest to online.
- The cleanest kill is Exquisite Blood plus Sanguine Bond or Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose. Any single point of life gained loops infinitely and drains the whole table. Demonic Tutor exists specifically to find the missing half.
- The Cauldron Familiar plus Witch’s Oven loop is your repeatable, grindy alternative. Sacrifice Cauldron Familiar to Oven to make a Food, sacrifice the Food to return Cauldron Familiar, and each loop drains one opponent for one and gains you one. With Mirkwood Bats or Nadier’s Nightblade out, that loop hits every opponent for more.
- Marionette Master turns each sacrificed Food into damage equal to its power. Two Foods and a doubler is often lethal to one player out of nowhere.
- Frodo himself is a legitimate clock once the Ring has tempted you three or more times. Unblockable, edict-forcing, card-drawing, and vigilant means he pressures a player every turn while you hold up removal.
- Do not forget Well of Lost Dreams. In a deck gaining this much life, it is a draw-seven waiting to happen and it refuels you completely after a board wipe.
Win Conditions & Combos
Exquisite Blood + Sanguine Bond
The classic two-card infinite. Gain any life, Sanguine Bond drains an opponent, Exquisite Blood gains you life from that loss, and the loop repeats until the table is at zero. Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose substitutes for Sanguine Bond, and Sorin of House Markov gives you a third redundant piece.
Cauldron Familiar + Witch's Oven
Sacrifice Cauldron Familiar to Witch’s Oven to create a Food, then sacrifice that Food to return Cauldron Familiar from the graveyard. Each iteration drains one opponent for 1 and gains you 1. It is not infinite on its own — Witch’s Oven only makes one Food per tap unless you have a second Oven — but with Sam’s cost reduction and a token doubler it becomes a machine gun.
Marionette Master burst
Marionette Master gives your artifacts a death-damage trigger equal to its power. Stack up Foods with Academy Manufactor and a doubler, then sacrifice them all in one turn for a lethal burst at a single opponent.
Token-drain attrition
Mirkwood Bats and Nadier’s Nightblade turn every Food and Treasure entering or leaving into incremental drain. Combined with Anointed Procession or Parallel Lives, a normal value turn becomes six to ten points spread across the table.
Frodo as a Ring-bearer clock
Once the Ring has tempted you two or more times, Frodo draws on every attack and can’t be blocked profitably. At three temptations he forces a sacrifice each combat. He wins slowly but he wins while you are doing everything else.
Budget Notes
Built as listed with premium lands and doublers, this deck runs roughly $850–900 USD at current market prices. The engine itself — Sam, Frodo, Witch’s Oven, Cauldron Familiar, Trail of Crumbs, Academy Manufactor — is under forty dollars combined. Almost all of the cost sits in the mana base and the token doublers, which makes this an unusually easy deck to build down.
| Premium Card | Budget Swap | What You Give Up |
|---|---|---|
| The Great Henge (~$65) | Beast Whisperer or Ohran Frostfang | You lose the mana and the life, but Beast Whisperer keeps the card flow going for a fraction of the price and this deck plays enough creatures to support it. |
| Anointed Procession (~$58) / Parallel Lives (~$36) | Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation is pricier — instead run Fable of the Mirror-Breaker style redundancy or simply Mondrak, Glory Dominus alone | Doublers are luxuries. One doubler is plenty; running the third and fourth copy is where the budget disappears. |
| Demonic Tutor (~$62) | Diabolic Tutor or Wishclaw Talisman | Two extra mana is a real cost, but the deck is grindy enough to afford it and Wishclaw is nearly free. |
| Fetchlands — Marsh Flats, Windswept Heath, Verdant Catacombs (~$75 combined) | Evolving Wilds, Terramorphic Expanse, Fabled Passage | You give up a small amount of shuffle consistency. In a three-color deck with a Triome and two shocklands, the difference is marginal. |
| Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth (~$57) / Boseiju, Who Endures (~$51) | Basic Swamp and Basic Forest | These are convenience lands, not engine pieces. Cutting both saves over a hundred dollars and costs you almost nothing in win rate. |
A full budget build following every swap above lands in the $250–300 range and loses very little of what makes the deck work.

HOOK (0:00–0:06) — Two hobbits. One Food token every single combat. And a Ring that turns a two-mana 2/2 into an unblockable card-draw engine. Here is the Abzan Frodo and Sam build.
CARD 1 (0:06–0:16) — Sam, Loyal Attendant. Free Food at the beginning of combat, every turn, forever — and every Food ability costs one less. This is the whole engine on a two-mana body.
CARD 2 (0:16–0:24) — Frodo, Adventurous Hobbit. Gain three life, the Ring tempts you. Two temptations in and every attack draws a card. Vigilance means attacking is free.
CARD 3 (0:24–0:33) — Academy Manufactor. Now every Food is also a Clue and a Treasure. Your free lifegain trigger became free card draw and free ramp.
CARD 4 (0:33–0:42) — Trail of Crumbs. Sacrifice a Food, dig two, take a permanent — for one mana with Sam out. This is how the deck refuses to run out of cards.
CARD 5 (0:42–0:52) — Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose. All that lifegain becomes life loss for the table. Pair it with Exquisite Blood and the game just ends.
