Y’shtola, Night’s Blessed is the single most-built commander on EDHREC this month — north of 54,000 decks and climbing since her Final Fantasy Commander printing. She’s a {1}{W}{U}{B} legend with vigilance and two triggers that turn a normal Esper control shell into a full-on drain deck: whenever you cast a noncreature spell with mana value 3 or greater, she deals 2 damage to each opponent and you gain 2 life, and at the beginning of each end step, if any player lost 4 or more life that turn, you draw a card.

This build leans into that engine hard. Instead of an aristocrats sacrifice shell, it’s a spell-slinging control deck: efficient removal, card draw, and a couple of board wipes do double duty as reach and refuel. A small package of Final Fantasy legends (Alphinaud and Alisaie Leveilleur, Papalymo, Emet-Selch, G’raha Tia) keeps the seat defended between spells, and drain-doublers like Bloodchief Ascension, Sanguine Bond, and Exquisite Blood turn 2-damage pings into a real clock — or an outright infinite combo.

Colors: Esper (W/U/B)  •  Bracket: high-power / optimized  •  Approx. as-built price: $678.95

Strategy Guide

Early Game (Turns 1–3)

Prioritize the mana rocks — Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, the three Talismans — over anything else in your opening hands. Hold up cheap interaction (Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, Snuff Out) rather than tapping out, and land Esper Sentinel or Baleful Strix if you have them for early card advantage. Don’t slam Y’shtola the moment you can — she does nothing sitting alone on an empty board. Wait until you have at least one or two noncreature spells ready to fire the turn after she resolves.

Mid Game (Turns 4–7)

Land Y’shtola and start chaining removal and draw spells behind her. Every Path to Exile, every Toxic Deluge, every card drawn off Rhystic Study or Mystic Remora is a noncreature spell — if it costs three or more, it pings the table for 2 and gains you 2 life. Watch the “lost 4 life this turn” clause on her second ability: a single big Toxic Deluge, or two separate triggers against the same opponent in one turn, refills your hand at the end step for free.

Late Game (Turn 8+)

Close from a comfortable board state with Exsanguinate for a lethal X, or grind opponents out with Bloodchief Ascension and Sanguine Bond backing up Y’shtola’s steady damage. If Sanguine Bond and Exquisite Blood are both in play, any life-loss trigger — including Y’shtola’s own — goes infinite and ends the game on the spot.

Win Conditions & Combos

  • Sanguine Bond + Exquisite Blood: whenever an opponent loses life, you gain that much life; whenever you gain life, that same opponent loses that much. Any repeatable life-loss trigger — including Y’shtola’s own damage ability — goes infinite and kills the table.
  • Exsanguinate for X: a hard alpha strike once your mana rocks are online — each opponent loses X life, you gain that much back.
  • Bloodchief Ascension, flipped: after three quest counters, every noncreature spell you cast draws you a card and every opponent’s draw step pings them for 3 — a second engine stacked directly on top of Y’shtola’s triggers.
  • Grind plan: even without assembling a combo, Alphinaud/Alisaie Leveilleur, Emet-Selch, and a steady stream of efficient removal simply out-card and out-damage the table over a long game.

Budget Notes

Premium build as priced above: approx. $678.95. The five swaps below trim roughly $330 without changing the game plan:

  • Sheoldred, the Apocalypse (~$100) → Gray Merchant of Asphodel (~$2): the same “drain the whole table” payoff for a fraction of the cost.
  • Rhystic Study (~$71) → Night’s Whisper (~$1): trades a repeatable tax engine for a one-shot budget draw spell that still fires Y’shtola on cast.
  • Esper Sentinel (~$63) → Omen Hawker (~$0.50): keeps the “cast noncreature spells, draw cards” plan alive for pocket change.
  • Exquisite Blood (~$37) → Cliffhaven Vampire (~$0.50): if you’re not chasing the infinite combo, a cheap lifegain-drain creature does similar work on the board.
  • Flooded Strand, Polluted Delta, and Marsh Flats (~$67 combined) → three basic lands (~$0.75): fetches are pure shuffle/fixing convenience — the manabase runs fine on basics.

Swap all five and the deck lands around $345 — same engine, same combo lines, a fraction of the buy-in.
