Commander Friday | Mono-Black Sacrifice & Recursion | October 2026

Overview

Avacyn, Angel of Horror is a mono-black Angel with a brutal price tag: {5}{B}{B}{B} for an 8/8 flying, deathtouch body. The upside is the ability that makes her special. Whenever Avacyn or another nontoken creature you control dies, that card returns to the battlefield under your control at the beginning of the next end step. Every creature you own gets a built-in recursion engine, and that turns an ordinary sacrifice shell into a machine that grinds opponents out.

She is climbing the EDHREC trending charts this week, with more than 2,100 decks already registered. The reason is simple: mono-black already had the best sacrifice outlets, drain effects and ritual mana in the format, and Avacyn lets all of it keep working. Sacrifice a creature for value, watch it come back at end step, and do it again next turn while Blood Artist and Zulaport Cutthroat chip away at every life total at the table.

This build leans into the classic Aristocrats plan: cheap sacrifice outlets, drain triggers, strong ETB creatures, and mono-black acceleration (Dark Ritual, Cabal Coffers, Nykthos) to get Avacyn down well ahead of schedule. Even when she is not on the battlefield, the deck is a legitimate sacrifice deck. When she is, it becomes very hard to remove your board permanently.

Strategy Guide

Early game (turns 1-3)

Develop mana and cheap value bodies. Sol Ring, Arcane Signet and Mind Stone are your best openings. Dark Ritual into Viscera Seer, Carrion Feeder, Plaguecrafter or Accursed Marauder keeps up. Play your sacrifice outlets (Ashnod's Altar, Phyrexian Altar, Skullclamp) and set up the Cabal lands. Save Culling the Weak and Dark Ritual for turns where they accelerate you into your engine.

Mid game (turns 4-6)

Land Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, Pitiless Plunderer and Grave Pact so every sacrifice has a payoff. Cabal Coffers with Urborg turns your Swamps into a ritual engine, and Nykthos pays off a heavy black devotion. Use Vampiric Tutor and Demonic Tutor to find whichever piece you are missing: an outlet, a drain effect or a reanimation spell. Hold up Tragic Slip and Village Rites for value when someone aims removal at your creatures.

Late game (turns 7+)

Cast Avacyn (or cheat her out with Reanimate, Animate Dead, or Dark Ritual into Cabal Coffers). Once she lands, sacrificing your team is a free action each turn: they come back at end step with their ETBs and your drain triggers pay you every time. Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Exsanguinate and The Meathook Massacre close games quickly. If the table wipes the board, Avacyn's trigger can bring your team back, so Damnation and Toxic Deluge become your own tools.

Win Conditions & Combos

  • Drain engine: Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, Dictate of Erebos and Grave Pact punish every death. With Avacyn in play, each creature dies, returns, and triggers again.
  • Big finishers: Gray Merchant of Asphodel (with Avacyn's BBB on board), Exsanguinate and The Meathook Massacre drain the table in one turn.
  • Archon of Cruelty and Massacre Wurm: each ETB and death trigger is a huge swing. Archon blinking back in repeatedly will take over the game by itself.
  • Skullclamp and Grim Haruspex keep the hand full so the engine never runs out of fuel.
  • Avacyn herself: an 8/8 flying deathtouch that comes back is a fine win condition on its own.

Budget Notes

Premium estimate: roughly $450-$600 depending on printings and condition. Most of that is tutors, Ancient Tomb, Cabal Coffers/Urborg and a few powerful rituals. The core engine (Blood Artist, Grave Pact, Viscera Seer, Gray Merchant, Plaguecrafter) is very affordable.

  • Ancient Tomb → Swamp or Castle Locthwain: you lose a little speed, not the plan.
  • Vampiric Tutor → Diabolic Tutor or Diabolic Intent: slower, same job of finding an outlet or drain piece.
  • Demonic Tutor → Sign in Blood or Night's Whisper: trade a perfect tutor for steady card flow.
  • Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth → Swamp: Cabal Coffers still works without it.
  • Reanimate → Dread Return: slower and costlier, but it still gets Avacyn (or any fallen creature) back from the graveyard.
