Format: Pauper | Total Deck Price: $57.71 | Archetype: Mono-Green Elves
Pauper — the format built entirely from commons — is already the cheapest competitive way to play Magic, and this week’s Budget Brew proves just how far that budget can go. This mono-green Elves list just put up a 2nd-place finish in a 60-player MTGO Challenge (September 28, 2026), and the entire 60-card deck rings up at $57.71. That’s a real, tournament-tested deck for less than a single rare mythic from a lot of Standard decks.
The Value Pitch
The plan is simple and brutally effective: flood the board with 1-mana Elves, convert them into a mana explosion with Priest of Titania and Quirion Ranger, refill your hand with Lead the Stampede and Winding Way, and close the game out of nowhere with a pumped-up Timberwatch Elf or a trampling Generous Ent. It’s proactive, it’s resilient to removal because you have so many bodies, and it rewards good sequencing over expensive cards.

Strategy Guide
Early Game (Turns 1-3): Mulligan aggressively for a 1-drop Elf. Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, and Fyndhorn Elves all accelerate you a full turn ahead — by turn 2 you want a second creature down, and by turn 3 you’re looking to cast Priest of Titania or a Quirion Ranger bounce-and-replay to start generating card and mana advantage.
Mid Game (Turns 4-6): This is where the deck explodes. Priest of Titania taps for mana equal to your Elf count, which refunds itself almost instantly and lets you chain Lead the Stampede or Winding Way into a full grip of cards. Masked Vandal doubles as a sideboard-in-the-maindeck answer to problematic artifacts and enchantments. Keep deploying bodies — width is the whole game plan.
Late Game (Turn 7+): Dump your hand, then win. Timberwatch Elf turns every other Elf on the board into damage for a single green mana per activation — with a wide board it routinely ends games out of nowhere. Generous Ent and Nyxborn Hydra scale with your Elf count too, so a board of 6-8 creatures turns into a lethal attack in one swing.
Win Conditions & Combos
- Timberwatch Elf overrun: with 5+ Elves in play, a couple of activations turns an unassuming board into a one-shot kill.
- Priest of Titania → Quirion Ranger loop: bounce and replay a Forest-walker to untap Priest effectively, snowballing mana into more threats.
- Generous Ent / Nyxborn Hydra: both scale off total Elf count, so they go from vanilla bodies to game-ending threats as the board fills up.
- Card advantage engine: Lead the Stampede and Winding Way refill your hand after an early flood, so you rarely run out of gas.
Upgrade Path
No premium sideboard needed — just these direct upgrades as your collection grows:
- Heritage Druid — further accelerates the mana engine for explosive starts.
- Distant Melody — a second mass card-draw spell to go with Lead the Stampede.
- Moment’s Peace — strong sideboard defense against other aggressive decks.
- Nurturing Peatland / Blossoming Sands — utility lands to smooth mana if splashing sideboard tech.
- Ulvenwald Captive — another cheap ramp/fixing creature that doubles as a late-game land once flipped.
The Bottom Line
Pauper rewards good sequencing and smart deckbuilding over a deep wallet, and this Elves list is proof: a 2nd-place tournament finish for under $58.
