💰 Budget Brew Wednesday — this week’s pick costs about $100 and it’s currently the #1 most-played deck in Pauper. Say hello to Mono-Red Madness.

Kessig Flamebreather

The Value Pitch

Mono-Red Madness sits atop the Pauper metagame at roughly 13.6% of the field — and it costs about $100 to build in paper, less than a single rare Modern staple. Pauper’s “commons and uncommons only” rule doesn’t just make the format cheap, it makes the format’s best deck cheap too.

The plan: discard cheap cards to Madness triggers off Faithless Looting and Grab the Prize, cash them in for free spells, then close with a wall of direct burn. Kessig Flamebreather turns every discard into extra damage to the opponent’s face — a deck that looks like a pile of 1-mana cantrips ends up killing people by turn 4-5.

Strategy Guide

Early (Turns 1-2): Lead on Voldaren Epicure or Sneaky Snacker to fill the graveyard. Faithless Looting digs for burn and sets up Madness — discard Lightning Bolt or Fiery Temper to cast them for free.

Mid (Turns 3-4): Kessig Flamebreather turns every noncreature spell into extra damage. Guttersnipe adds another trigger on top. Grab the Prize and Highway Robbery double as removal/reach and Madness enablers.

Late (Turn 5+): Fireblast (free by sacrificing 2 Mountains) is the classic reach spell. Most games end by turn 5-6.

Win Conditions

  • Kessig Flamebreather + Guttersnipe convert every cheap spell into reach — a full graveyard often adds up to lethal on its own.
  • Combat damage from Voldaren Epicure, Sneaky Snacker, and repeated Guttersnipe triggers chips away fast while burn closes.
  • Fireblast + Lightning Bolt + Fiery Temper is a common lethal burn package once the opponent is below 6-8 life.

Upgrade Path

  • Play Pyroblast/Red Elemental Blast main-deck if the local meta is blue-heavy (Mono-Blue Terror, Faeries).
  • Add a 4th Fireblast by cutting a Guttersnipe for maximum reach over board presence.
  • Consider Chain Lightning or Skewer the Critics as additional burn options.
  • Relic of Progenitus main-deck is a strong call versus graveyard-dependent metas like Tron or Spy Combo.

The Bottom Line

Pauper proves every week that the best deck in a format doesn’t have to be the most expensive one. Mono-Red Madness is the most-played deck in Pauper right now, brutally efficient, and comes in at about $100 for the entire 75-card set.
