Standard (MTG Arena) – September 2026 | Mana Riot Games Deck Tech Tuesday

Overview

Standard right now is a race between Mono-Green Landfall making 20-power monsters out of nowhere and Dimir Midrange trying to Kaito its way to inevitability. Orzhov Lifegain sits between the two and beats both by doing something neither can interact with cleanly: it turns a stack of one-mana permanents into an inevitable drain clock that also happens to be a combo deck.

The archetype is holding 6.5% of the Standard metagame (64 recent lists on MTGGoldfish), and it has quietly become the best-positioned white-black build in the format. The reason is redundancy. This is not a deck that needs to find one card – it needs to find any two of about fourteen, and the lifegain engine assembles itself.

Amalia Benavides Aguirre is the marquee card and the win condition, but she is not the deck. Even a version of this list that never explores once still wins games by grinding out incremental drain with Starscape Cleric and Lunar Convocation while Voice of Victory shuts off opposing removal on your turn. Amalia is the ceiling. The floor is a lifelinking aggro deck that plays through sweepers.

That combination – unfair top end stapled to a fair, resilient base – is exactly the profile that beats a polarized metagame. And because the mana is a clean two colors, the sequencing is far more forgiving than the 4c Control piles at the top of the format.

Strategy Guide

Turns 1-3: Build the trigger board, not the damage board

Your opening plays are cheap and boring on purpose. Hinterland Sanctifier, Case of the Uneaten Feast, Aunt May, Leonardo – none of these do anything impressive on rate. What they do is guarantee that every creature you cast for the rest of the game gains you life. A turn-one Case into a turn-two Sanctifier means your turn-three Haliya gains you three life on entry, draws you a card at end step, and puts two counters on an Amalia you have not even cast yet.

The most common mistake with this deck is treating it like an aggro deck and leading with the biggest body. Don’t. Lead with the enablers. The payoffs cost the same on turn five as they do on turn three, but the triggers you missed on turns one and two are gone forever.

Turns 3-5: Land Amalia behind protection, or don’t land her at all

Amalia has Ward – Pay 3 life, which sounds like real protection until you remember every removal deck in Standard is happy to pay it. Voice of Victory is the actual protection: opponents cannot cast spells during your turn, which means an Amalia you cast into an untapped Voice of Victory cannot be answered at instant speed before you untap.

If you cannot protect her, cast Moseo or Zoraline instead and start the drain plan. Amalia in hand is safer than Amalia dead on the battlefield – you get exactly one good window per game and burning it into open mana against Dimir is how these games get thrown away. Track your opponent’s untapped lands and the specific one-mana answers in their deck before committing.

Turns 5+: Two clocks, pick the one they can’t answer

By turn five you should have a choice. Clock A is combat: Leonardo with four counters, a couple of Bats, and Voice of Victory mobilizing warriors is enough damage to close a game in three swings. Clock B is drain: Starscape Cleric plus Lunar Convocation plus any lifegain trigger means their life total falls whether or not you attack, and Moseo rebuilds the board every end step you gained life.

Against removal-heavy decks, lean on Clock B – it survives sweepers because Lunar Convocation is an enchantment and Starscape Cleric is easy to rebuild. Against decks that go over the top, take Clock A and force them to have the answer while they are trying to set up. And in either lane, Amalia hitting exactly 20 power ends the game outright.

Win Conditions & Combos

  • The Amalia board wipe — Amalia explores on every lifegain trigger. With Case of the Uneaten Feast plus Hinterland Sanctifier in play, a single creature entering can put two counters on her. Get her to exactly 20 power and every other creature on the battlefield dies – yours included, but you are the one holding a 20/20 with Ward. This is the game-ending line and it happens more often than the meme suggests.
  • Starscape Cleric drain — Every lifegain trigger makes each opponent lose 1. With two Clerics (or one plus its Offspring token) and a Sanctifier, a normal turn of casting two creatures drains for 4-8 without attacking. This is your primary win condition against decks that can profitably block.
  • Lunar Convocation inevitability — End step: gained life, they lose 1. Gained and lost life, make a flying Bat. That Bat attacks into Zoraline for another lifegain trigger. It is slow, it is unstoppable by creature removal, and it wins long games on its own.
  • Enduring Tenacity turbo-drain (sideboard) — Whenever you gain life, target opponent loses that much. Stack it with the Sanctifier package and a single Emptiness entering can drain for 4+. It also returns to the battlefield when it dies, so removal barely slows it down.
  • Moseo recursion loops — Infusion returns a creature with mana value X or less from your graveyard, where X is the life you gained this turn. Gain four life and you are rebuying Haliya every single turn – which gains more life, which draws more cards.

Sideboard Guide

vs Mono-Green Landfall (17.8%)

IN: 3 Curious Farm Animals is wrong here – keep the creature count. IN: 1 Erode, 1 Seam Rip, 1 Authority of the Consuls. OUT: 2 Starscape Cleric, 1 Strategic Betrayal.

This matchup is about not dying to one enormous creature. Erode is your best card – it answers a Mightform-pumped attacker for one mana. Authority of the Consuls blanks their haste starts and adds triggers. Your lifegain outpaces their early damage, so the game comes down to whether you have an answer for the one turn they double a creature’s power. Hold removal for the pump turn, not the creature.

vs Dimir Midrange (11.0%)

IN: 1 Phyrexian Arena, 1 Decorum Dissertation, 2 Ancient Vendetta. OUT: 2 Emptiness, 1 Curious Farm Animals, 1 Aunt May.

They have more removal than you have threats, so shift toward attrition. Do not overcommit into a sweeper – two threats at a time is plenty when Lunar Convocation is doing the actual work. Voice of Victory is your most important card because it turns off their instant-speed interaction on your turn; protect it. Kaito is the card that beats you, so keep Erode available.

vs Sultai Reanimator / Dimir Excruciator

IN: 3 Leyline of the Void, 2 Ancient Vendetta, 1 Erode. OUT: 2 Emptiness, 2 Essence Channeler, 1 Curious Farm Animals, 1 Aunt May.

Leyline of the Void is close to game over on turn zero and still fine drawn later. Mulligan more aggressively than usual to see it. Strategic Betrayal stays in the main deck for a reason – exiling the graveyard plus a creature at the same time is a two-for-one against these decks. Race them; they are slower than they look.

vs Izzet Spellementals (8.8%)

IN: 1 Authority of the Consuls, 1 Seam Rip, 2 Shoot the Sheriff. OUT: 2 Emptiness, 1 Strategic Betrayal, 1 Curious Farm Animals.

Your lifegain is a real problem for a deck trying to burn you out. Play to the board, keep gaining, and let Lunar Convocation drain them from the other side. Voice of Victory is again enormous – it means they cannot flash in an answer during your attack step.

vs 4c Control (7.1%)

IN: 1 Phyrexian Arena, 1 Decorum Dissertation, 1 Enduring Tenacity, 2 Ancient Vendetta. OUT: 2 Erode, 1 Curious Farm Animals, 2 Emptiness.

Cut most of your removal – they have very few creatures worth spending a card on. Convocation and Arena win the long game. Deploy one threat at a time, force them to answer it, and use the turn they tap out to add a second. Voice of Victory into a threat is your best possible sequence.

Budget Notes

Premium paper build lands around $235. Here are the swaps that bring it down without gutting the engine.

  • Voice of Victory ($20 each, 3 copies) — Replace with 3 Aven Interrupter or 2 additional Hinterland Sanctifier plus 1 Aunt May. You lose the opposing-instant lock, which is real, but the lifegain count stays intact and the deck still functions. This is the single biggest cost saving in the list – roughly $55.
  • Starting Town ($10 each, 4 copies) — Replace with 2 Plains and 2 Swamp. The mana gets noticeably clunkier and you will have more color-screw games, but a two-color deck can survive basics far better than a three- or four-color one. Saves about $38.
  • Godless Shrine ($8 each, 4 copies) — Replace with 4 Fetid Pools-style tapped duals or simply 2 more Concealed Courtyard plus 2 basics. Entering tapped hurts a curve this low, so play the Courtyards first. Saves about $28.
  • Bleachbone Verge ($10) — Straight swap to a basic Swamp. It is a one-of; the deck barely notices. Saves $10.
  • Erode ($6 each) — Swap to Shoot the Sheriff or Requiting Hex from the sideboard – both are under $1.50 and handle most of the format’s two-drops. You lose the ability to answer big creatures and planeswalkers, which matters against Mono-Green. Saves about $15.

Full premium build lands around $235 in paper. Making all five swaps above brings it to roughly $90-100 while keeping the Amalia engine, the drain package, and the core game plan fully intact. On MTG Arena the deck is a comfortable mid-tier wildcard investment – the expensive paper cards (Voice of Victory, the duals) are common-to-rare in Arena terms and the mythic count is low.

Closing Thoughts

Orzhov Lifegain is the deck to pick up if you want something that punishes an unprepared metagame without asking you to draw a specific card. The engine is redundant, the mana is clean, the removal is cheap, and the ceiling – a 20-power Amalia clearing the battlefield – is the kind of finish people remember. Build it, sleeve it, and go take a league. A new Deck Tech Tuesday lands every week at manariotgames.com.
