Modern just went through one of its stranger identity crises in recent memory — and it happened in barely four weeks. A month ago, Pro Tour Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes crowned Boros Energy and Izzet Affinity as the format’s most-played decks. Today, both have all but collapsed, and a new crop of midrange and combo strategies — freshly stocked with cards from Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit — has rushed in to fill the void. The timing couldn’t be better: Magic Spotlight: The Hobbit kicks off this weekend in Brisbane, Australia (with a second stop in Dallas on September 4–6), putting $50,000 and eight Pro Tour invitations on the line in exactly this format.
Aggro Falls, Midrange and Combo Rise
According to Wizards’ own metagame breakdown of more than 800 tournament decks played between August 11 and August 23, Esper Goryo’s now sits atop Modern at 11% of the winner’s metagame share, with Esper Blink close behind at 8.2%. Both decks lean on the same midrange core — Thoughtseize, Solitude, Quantum Riddler, Ephemerate — while diverging on their finishers: reanimating Atraxa, Grand Unifier through Goryo’s Vengeance versus a blink package built around Phelia, Exuberant Shepherd and Overlord of the Balemurk.
What’s most telling is the sheer spread beneath them. No fewer than 25 distinct archetypes claimed at least 1% of the winner’s metagame, and the catch-all “Other” bucket — everything from Amulet Titan to Lantern Control — was bigger than any single deck. Boros Energy and Izzet Affinity, last month’s stars, were both winning only around 45% of their matches at the Pro Tour despite their popularity, and players have clearly moved on. Right now, Modern rewards having a plan more than it rewards playing the “best” deck, because there isn’t one.
The Deck Everyone’s Suddenly Talking About
The biggest riser by far is Devoted Druid Combo, up to 7.9% of the winner’s metagame after barely registering at last month’s Pro Tour. The engine itself isn’t new — Vizier of Remedies lets you untap Devoted Druid without adding -1/-1 counters, generating infinite green mana that you dump into Walking Ballista, Duskwatch Recruiter, or Leyline of Abundance.
What changed is Leyline of Abundance. Player Selesneal reworked the list to run it alongside a fetchable Dryad Arbor and fourteen mana dorks, and the deck exploded from a near-unplayed curiosity into a Modern Challenge finalist practically overnight. “The deck is the perfect combination of fast and resilient,” Selesneal wrote after the run — and the timing lined up with Boros Energy’s decline, since Goblin Bombardment (one of the best answers to the combo) has become far less common in the metagame it’s chasing.
The Hobbit’s New Modern Staples
New sets rarely reshape a 22-year-old card pool overnight, but a handful of Hobbit cards are already finding real homes. Key to the Side-Door and Bilbo, Thief in the Night have popped up together in Izzet and Dimir “Legends” shells, where Bilbo recurs Unholy Heat or Mishra’s Bauble from the yard and Key turns extra legendary copies into card draw. Meanwhile, Kíli the Resourceful — essentially a smaller, legendary Puresteel Paladin — has given Hammer Time a real reason to exist again, curving out of Urza’s Saga into a live Leyline Axe.
Even Boros Energy, down but not out, has found a new role player in Belladonna Took, who turns Seasoned Pyromancer and Ocelot Pride tokens into a repeatable card-draw engine.
Why It Matters
A metagame this scattered is good news if you’ve been sitting on an off-meta Modern deck — this is the kind of format where an underprepared field lets a well-tuned rogue strategy sneak through unscathed. It’s also a reminder that Pro Tour results are a snapshot, not a prophecy: the “best” deck at a marquee event can look completely different a month later once the wider player base has time to adjust, tech in new cards, and punish whatever just won. With Spotlight: The Hobbit running all weekend and Modern Regional Championships on deck for September and October, expect this list to keep shuffling fast.
