A Sultai Elves deck where every dead Elf hands the Elvenking a new button to press.

Why Thranduil, the Elvenking is a genuinely different build

Most Elf decks in Commander are a math problem. Play dorks, play lords, cast one big spell, win. Fun the first time, a little samey by the fifth.

Thranduil, the Elvenking rewrites the assignment. For {2}{B}{G}{U} you get a 5/6 that says: Thranduil has all activated abilities of all Elf cards in your graveyard. Not the Elves you control — the Elves in the bin. Every Elf that dies, gets discarded, or gets milled is permanently bolted onto your commander as a new ability.

That means your graveyard stops being a scrapyard and becomes a control panel. Mill Imperious Perfect and Thranduil taps to make an Elf token every turn. Add Devoted Druid and he untaps himself. Add Timberwatch Elf and he pumps an attacker to lethal. Add Priest of Titania and he taps for a pile of green. You are not rebuilding a board after a wrath — you are building a machine that a wrath cannot touch.

The second line matters too: Whenever another legendary Elf you control enters, draw two cards, then discard a card. That discard is not a cost, it is the point. Every legendary Elf you play draws two and lets you place exactly the ability you want under your commander. Card advantage and assembly in the same trigger.

Sultai colors give the deck the three things it needs: green for the mana engine and the Elf package, black for reanimation and tutors, blue for self-mill and the counterspells that protect a commander this important.

Creatures (34)

CardCostWhy it’s here
Llanowar Elves{G}Turn-one mana. Later, it’s a graveyard ability Thranduil can’t use — but it got you there.
Elvish Mystic{G}Redundant copy #2 of the turn-one dork. Consistency wins games.
Fyndhorn Elves{G}Redundant copy #3. You want to cast Thranduil on turn three.
Arbor Elf{G}Untaps Overgrown Tomb and Breeding Pool, not just Forests.
Elves of Deep Shadow{G}Black mana on turn one is what turns a green start into a Sultai one.
Deathrite Shaman{B/G}Three activated abilities. Put it in the yard and Thranduil becomes a mana rock, a drain engine, and graveyard hate all at once.
Priest of Titania{1}{G}The single best mana engine in the deck. Also the combo half with Umbral Mantle.
Elvish Archdruid{1}{G}{G}Lord plus mana. Both halves matter here.
Marwyn, the Nurturer{2}{G}Grows every time an Elf lands, and taps for that much.
Circle of Dreams Druid{G}{G}{G}Five Elves out means five mana. That’s a Genesis Wave turn.
Bloom Tender{1}{G}With Thranduil on board you’re WUBRG-adjacent — Tender taps for three in Sultai.
Devoted Druid{1}{G}Untap ability in the graveyard means Thranduil untaps himself. That’s the engine.
Timberwatch Elf{2}{G}In the yard, Thranduil taps to give any attacker a massive pump.
Immaculate Magistrate{3}{G}Graveyard Magistrate turns Thranduil into a counter cannon every single turn.
Imperious Perfect{2}{G}Our favorite graveyard ability: tap Thranduil, make an Elf. Free army, forever.
Elvish Harbinger{2}{G}Tutors any Elf to the top. In the yard, it’s a repeatable Elf tutor on Thranduil.
Fauna Shaman{1}{G}Discard an Elf, find an Elf. Fills the yard AND finds the piece — the best card in the deck.
Allosaurus Shepherd{G}Uncounterable Elves and a pump ability Thranduil inherits.
Underrealm Lich{3}{B}{G}Card selection plus a graveyard-stacking ability. Also stops you from decking out.
Wirewood Channeler{3}{G}Taps for a pile of mana in any color you need.
Leaf-Crowned Visionary{G}{G}Every Elf draws a card. The deck runs on this.
Beast Whisperer{2}{G}{G}Same effect, different body. Redundancy in a tribal deck is not optional.
Abomination of Llanowar{1}{B}{G}Huge body, graveyard tutor, and it fuels the yard by exiling it.
Reclamation Sage{2}{G}Interaction that’s still an Elf. In the yard it does nothing — cast it, don’t mill it.
Lathril, Blade of the Elves{2}{B}{G}Legendary Elf: draws two on entry. Then it drains the table.
Ezuri, Renegade Leader{1}{G}{G}Regenerate all Elves and overrun for the kill. In the yard, Thranduil does both.
Eladamri, Korvecdal{1}{G}{G}Free creatures off the top every turn plus card selection.
Selvala, Heart of the Wilds{1}{G}{G}Absurd mana on a legendary body. Draw two when she lands.
Dionus, Elvish Archdruid{3}{G}Legendary Elf lord that protects the team and triggers the draw.
Thranduil the Strategist{3}{G}{U}The other Thranduil. Legendary Elf, so he draws you two, and his own ability is worth having.
Arwen, Weaver of Hope{1}{G}{G}Counters across the board and another legendary draw trigger.
Glissa Sunslayer{1}{B}{G}Legendary Elf that removes a permanent every combat.
Tyvar the Bellicose{2}{B}{G}Mana dorks tap for extra and get deathtouch. Legendary, so it draws two.
Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord{B}{B}{G}{G}Sacrifice your massive Elves to drain the table. The backup wincon.

Instants (7)

CardCostWhy it’s here
Heroic Intervention{1}{G}One card beats one wrath. Hold it.

Counterspell{U}{U}You’re blue. Act like it.
Swan Song{U}One mana to stop the wrath that would end you.
Beast Within{2}{G}Answers literally anything for three.
Arcane Denial{1}{U}Cheap counter that keeps the table friendly.
Grisly Salvage{B}{G}Self-mill that also finds a land. Loads Thranduil for two mana.

Sorceries (11)

CardCostWhy it’s here
Cultivate{2}{G}Fixing plus a land drop. Standard, still great.
Nature's Lore{1}{G}Fetches an untapped shockland. Better than Rampant Growth every time.
Three Visits{1}{G}Nature’s Lore #2.
Farseek{1}{G}Grabs Watery Grave or Overgrown Tomb for the black and blue you need.
Buried Alive{2}{B}Three Elves straight into the yard. This is the deck’s mission statement.
Reanimate{B}One mana to bring back whatever Buried Alive dumped.
Unmarked Grave{1}{B}Precision self-mill. Put the exact ability you want under Thranduil.
Victimize{2}{B}Sacrifice a mana dork, get two Elves back untapped and ready.
Green Sun's Zenith{X}{G}Any green creature at instant… well, sorcery speed. Finds Dryad Arbor to Shepherd.
Elvish Promenade{3}{G}Doubles your board in one card.
Toxic Deluge{2}{B}The wrath you keep for the deck that’s faster than you.

Artifacts (9)

CardCostWhy it’s here

Arcane Signet{2}Fixing on turn two so Thranduil lands on three.
Talisman of Resilience{2}Green and black on a two-drop.
Lightning Greaves{2}Thranduil is a lightning rod. Protect him.
Swiftfoot Boots{2}Hexproof plus haste for the activated abilities.
Skullclamp{1}Elf tokens die and draw two. Absurd with Imperious Perfect.
Umbral Mantle{3}Untap Priest of Titania for infinite mana. That’s a real combo, not a cute one.
Thousand-Year Elixir{3}Haste for Thranduil AND untap to use graveyard abilities twice.
Herald's Horn{3}Cheaper Elves and free card advantage off the top.

Enchantments (5)

CardCostWhy it’s here
Sylvan Library{1}{G}The best card selection in green.
Survival of the Fittest{1}{G}Discard an Elf, tutor an Elf. Fills the yard while it fixes your hand.

Elven Chorus{3}{G}Play off the top and every Elf taps for mana.
Intruder Alarm{2}{U}With Imperious Perfect in the yard, untap Thranduil every time a token enters. That’s an infinite army.

Planeswalkers (1)

Strategy Guide

Turns 1–3: mana first, always

Lead on a dork. Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, Elves of Deep Shadow, Arbor Elf — you run five one-drops for exactly one reason: Thranduil should be on the battlefield on turn three, not turn five.

Turn two wants Fauna Shaman, Arcane Signet, or a Nature’s Lore that grabs an untapped shockland. Fauna Shaman is quietly the best card in the deck because its discard fills the graveyard while its tutor finds the piece you’re missing.

Do not be afraid of an empty-looking turn two spent on Grisly Salvage. Five cards into the yard is five potential abilities.

Turns 3–5: cast the Elvenking, then load him

Thranduil lands. Now the deck plays a completely different game than the table expects. Buried Alive is the loudest turn you can have — three specific Elves straight into the yard, chosen for what Thranduil does with them. The default package is Imperious Perfect, Devoted Druid, and Priest of Titania.

Entomb does it for one mana at instant speed. Unmarked Grave does it for two. Survival of the Fittest does it every single turn.

Once he’s loaded, protect him. Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots are not optional in a deck where the commander is the entire engine. Swan Song and Arcane Denial are for the removal spell you can see coming.

Turns 5+: the machine runs itself

By now Thranduil taps for mana, makes tokens, untaps himself, and pumps the team — all from cards that are already dead. Leaf-Crowned Visionary and Kindred Discovery turn the token production into a draw engine. Every legendary Elf you play draws two more.

This is also where the deck stops being fair. Priest of Titania plus Umbral Mantle is infinite green mana. Intruder Alarm with Imperious Perfect in the graveyard untaps Thranduil every time a token enters — which makes another token, which untaps him again. Ezuri, Renegade Leader in the yard turns that infinite army into infinite trample damage.

If nothing degenerate is available, Ezuri’s overrun or Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord throwing a 20/20 Elf at each opponent closes it the honest way.

Win Conditions & Combos

Intruder Alarm + Imperious Perfect (in the graveyard)

Thranduil taps to make an Elf token. The token entering untaps every creature, including Thranduil. Repeat until your board is as wide as you want, then attack. This is the cleanest infinite in the deck and both halves are cards you’re already happy to draw.

Priest of Titania + Umbral Mantle

With three or more Elves on board, Priest taps for four or more. Umbral Mantle untaps her for three. Net positive mana, infinitely. Dump it into Green Sun’s Zenith, Exsanguinate-style drains, or Ezuri’s regenerate-and-overrun.

Devoted Druid in the yard + Thranduil

Thranduil inherits “put a -1/-1 counter on this creature: untap it.” On a 5/6 body that’s five extra activations of every other ability he’s holding. Fair-ish. Extremely strong.

Ezuri, Renegade Leader — the honest kill

{2}{G}: Elves you control get +3/+3 and trample. From the graveyard, Thranduil does it. With ten tokens on board that’s lethal from nowhere and it dodges creature-based blockers entirely.

Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord — the backup plan

When the board gets swept or your attack gets fogged, sacrifice your biggest Elves to drain the table. Jarad is also a legendary Elf, so he draws two on the way down.

Budget Notes

Built with the premium version of every card, this list runs about $774 at current market prices. The good news: Thranduil decks are engine decks, and engines are cheap. The expensive cards here are lands and one flashy Elf — none of them are the reason the deck works.

CutCostSwap inCostNotes
Thranduil the Strategist$67.59Elvish Warmaster$3.92You lose a legendary Elf draw trigger, but Warmaster makes tokens every turn and its pump is graveyard-relevant.
Allosaurus Shepherd$50.47Wirewood Symbiote$0.29Different job, similar impact — Symbiote untaps a dork every turn and rebuys enter-the-battlefield Elves.
Cavern of Souls$49.95Opulent Palace$0.36You give up uncounterability for a tapland. Painful, but it's fifty dollars of fixing for thirty-six cents.
Boseiju, Who Endures$49.28Krosan Verge$0.29Verge fetches two duals instead of answering a permanent. Beast Within is already in the list for that.
Misty Rainforest / Verdant Catacombs / Polluted Delta$84.45Evolving Wilds / Terramorphic Expanse / Jungle Hollow$0.69Fetchlands are a luxury tax in a three-color deck with this much fixing already.
Green Sun's Zenith$31.93Chord of Calling$6.91Chord is instant speed and convoke is trivially easy with a board full of Elves.

Those six swaps take roughly $321 off the top, landing the build near $453 without touching a single piece of the actual engine. Buried Alive, Imperious Perfect, Devoted Druid, Intruder Alarm, and Priest of Titania are all budget-friendly — which is exactly why this commander is such a good pick-up right now.

The 60-Second Version

  • HOOK (0:00–0:06) — Your graveyard isn't a graveyard. It's a toolbox — and Thranduil, the Elvenking is holding every tool in it.
  • SETUP (0:06–0:14) — Four mana. Sultai. He has all the activated abilities of every Elf in your yard. Not on the battlefield. In the yard. Let me show you five cards that break that.
  • CARD 1 (0:14–0:22) — Imperious Perfect. Mill it, and now Thranduil taps to make an Elf token every single turn. Free army from a dead card.
  • CARD 2 (0:22–0:30) — Devoted Druid. In the yard, Thranduil untaps himself. Now he makes two tokens. Or three.
  • CARD 3 (0:30–0:38) — Intruder Alarm. Every token that enters untaps Thranduil. That loop does not stop until you decide it does.
  • CARD 4 (0:38–0:46) — Priest of Titania plus Umbral Mantle. Infinite green mana with three Elves out. That's the fast kill.
  • CARD 5 (0:46–0:53) — Buried Alive. Three specific Elves, straight into the toolbox, for three mana. This is the whole deck in one card.

Wrap-Up

Thranduil, the Elvenking is the rare tribal commander that asks you to play the graveyard game and the aggro game at the same time — and rewards you for doing both badly-but-fast rather than perfectly. Every Elf that dies makes him better. Every wrath is a deposit. That’s a great place to be sitting in a four-player pod.
