The One-Winged Angel turns every creature you lose into a drain trigger — and then flips into a flying, card-drawing finisher.
Overview
Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER is a three-mana mono-black legend that reads like a build-around and plays like a win condition. The front face does two things: it converts a creature into a card whenever it enters or attacks, and it drains an opponent for one every single time another creature dies. Not a creature you control — any creature. Board wipes, chump blocks, someone else’s sacrifice outlet, all of it feeds the count.
Then there is the number four. The fourth time that drain trigger resolves in a turn, Sephiroth transforms into Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel, and the Super Nova ability hands you an emblem that keeps draining on every creature death for the rest of the game. That emblem is the whole deck. Once it lands, Sephiroth can eat a wipe, get exiled, get tucked — it does not matter. The drain stays.
So the build is not subtle: cheap bodies, free sacrifice outlets, recursive creatures that come back for nothing, and enough removal to make sure the fourth death happens on your terms. We are running 27 creatures, eleven artifacts, and a mana base built around Cabal Coffers so the late game has a place to dump twenty mana. This is an aristocrats deck where the payoff is stapled to the command zone, which means it is genuinely resilient — you never have to draw the engine, only the fodder.
Power level: this sits comfortably at a strong mid-to-high bracket table. It is not a cEDH list, but it closes games from a board state that looks like nothing, and that is exactly the kind of deck that ruins a pod’s math.

Strategy Guide
Early Game (Turns 1-3)
Turns one through three are about mana and fodder, not Sephiroth. Sol Ring, Charcoal Diamond, Arcane Signet, Mind Stone — any of them gets the commander down a turn early, and a turn-two Sephiroth is a real threat because nobody has blockers yet.
Bitterblossom on turn two is the single best non-Sol Ring opener in the deck. A free 1/1 every upkeep is four turns of fodder banked before you have even cast your commander. Dreadhorde Invasion does similar work with a lifelink rider.
Do not jam Sephiroth into an open board with no sacrifice outlet unless you are fine trading him. The commander tax on a mono-black deck with Cabal Coffers is survivable, but you want the first cast to stick.
Mid Game (Turns 4-7)
The middle turns are about assembling one free sacrifice outlet plus one recursive creature. Carrion Feeder or Viscera Seer plus Gravecrawler, Bloodghast, or Reassembling Skeleton is the core loop. Ashnod’s Altar and Phyrexian Altar upgrade the loop from ‘grindy’ to ‘mana-positive’.
Priest of Forgotten Gods is the best card in the deck that is not the commander. Tap, sacrifice two creatures, each opponent loses two life and sacrifices a creature, and you get two black mana and a card. That is four death triggers on the stack in one activation — the flip, immediately.
Pitiless Plunderer and Warren Soultrader turn every death into resources, which is how you chain a whole turn together. Skullclamp on a 1/1 token is a card every time you sacrifice it.
Edict effects — Fleshbag Marauder, Merciless Executioner, Plaguecrafter — do double duty here: they strip a blocker and they trigger Sephiroth when the opponent’s creature dies. Remember, the drain counts every creature, not just yours.
Late Game (Turn 8+)
Once the emblem is online, the game becomes arithmetic. Grave Pact and Dictate of Erebos mean every sacrifice you make costs the table a creature, and every one of those deaths drains. A single Priest activation with Grave Pact out can be six or seven triggers.
Cabal Coffers with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth is the mana engine for Torment of Hailfire, which is the deck’s ‘I win this turn’ button when the drain has not finished the job.
Living Death is the haymaker. After a few turns of sacrificing, your graveyard is stacked and everyone else’s is not — cast it, rebuild a full board, and let the death triggers from the wipe portion do the damage on the way in.
Drivnod, Carnage Dominus doubles every death trigger you control, which halves the number of creatures you need to flip Sephiroth and doubles every Blood Artist effect.
Win Conditions & Combos
The emblem plus a drain body — Sephiroth’s Super Nova emblem stacks with Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, Vengeful Bloodwitch, and Bastion of Remembrance. Four permanents each draining one per death means a five-creature sacrifice turn is twenty life spread across the table.
Priest of Forgotten Gods, repeatedly — With a recursive creature and any free sacrifice outlet, Priest becomes a per-turn drain of two per opponent plus a forced sacrifice plus a card. It flips Sephiroth on its own and then keeps going.
Torment of Hailfire off Coffers mana — Urborg plus Cabal Coffers plus a couple of Swamps is fifteen-plus black mana by turn eight. X=8 on Torment of Hailfire ends most games outright.
Infinite-adjacent: Gravecrawler + Phyrexian Altar + Ayara — Ayara, First of Locthwain drains one per black creature entering. Cast Gravecrawler, sacrifice it to Phyrexian Altar for one black, replay it from the graveyard because you control a Zombie. With Ayara out, that is a loop that drains each opponent for one per iteration — and every death also triggers Sephiroth and every Blood Artist effect.
Living Death reset — Sacrifice everything, cast Living Death, return a full graveyard while everyone else returns whatever they lost to your edicts. The death triggers on the way out often finish the table before the creatures even come back.
Budget Notes
Built as listed, this deck runs roughly $700-$800 at retail, and most of that is concentrated in about eight cards. The engine itself is cheap — Priest of Forgotten Gods, Carrion Feeder, Gravecrawler, Blood Artist, and Reassembling Skeleton are all a few dollars combined. Here is where to cut without gutting the deck:
| Cut | Swap In | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Orcish Bowmasters (~$28) | Midnight Reaper (~$2) | Still turns every death into a card; you lose the ping-on-draw, keep the engine. |
| Vampiric Tutor (~$25) | Dark Petition (~$1) | Slower, but Spell Mastery often refunds the mana in an aristocrats deck full of cheap spells. |
| Demonic Tutor (~$22) | Diabolic Tutor (~$0.50) | Two extra mana for the same card. Fine at a normal table. |
| Bitterblossom (~$25) | Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder (~$2) | Different clock, same job: a body every turn to feed the altar. |
| Yawgmoth, Thran Physician (~$24) | Vampiric Rites (~$1) | Loses the -1/-1 machine gun, keeps the sac-outlet-plus-draw that the deck actually needs. |
| Cabal Coffers (~$25) | Cabal Stronghold (~$2) | Only counts basics, but this deck runs 17 Swamps, so it still gets there. |
Making all six swaps drops the build to roughly the $400 range while keeping every piece of the sacrifice engine intact.
TikTok / Shorts Script (45-60s)
HOOK (0-4s) — This commander wins the game four deaths at a time — and once he flips, killing him does nothing.
BEAT 1 (4-14s) — Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER. Three mana, mono-black. Every creature that dies — anyone’s creature — drains an opponent for one and gains you one.
BEAT 2 (14-24s) — Fourth death in a turn, he flips into the One-Winged Angel and you get an emblem that keeps draining forever. Remove him after that and the emblem still sits there.
BEAT 3 (24-34s) — Priest of Forgotten Gods is the flip button. Sac two creatures, everyone loses two, everyone sacrifices, you get two mana and a card. That’s four triggers in one activation.
BEAT 4 (34-44s) — Gravecrawler plus Phyrexian Altar plus Ayara, First of Locthwain — free sac loop, free recursion, drain every single iteration.
BEAT 5 (44-52s) — And when it stalls, Cabal Coffers into Torment of Hailfire for eight. Nobody survives that.

That’s the build. Sephiroth is one of those commanders where the deck almost writes itself once you understand the number four, and the emblem makes it far harder to answer than a three-mana 3/3 has any right to be. Take it to your next pod and watch how fast people start counting death triggers out loud. A new Commander Friday build lands every week at manariotgames.com.
