The Gundam Card Game just turned one, and Bandai isn’t slowing down to blow out candles. Since its worldwide launch, the game has shipped more than 500 million cards and drawn over 700,000 participants to official events — and this first anniversary summer is stacking one announcement on top of another. New products dropped this week, the anniversary set is already reshaping tournaments, and the next booster is already teasing two fan-favorite Universal Century series. Freedom Ascension Is Running the Table
The anniversary booster, Freedom Ascension [GD05], released July 24 and finally brought two of the franchise’s most requested Mobile Suits into the game: Strike Freedom Gundam (from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny) and ν (Nu) Gundam (from Char’s Counterattack). The set also debuted “Link Rare,” a new parallel rarity that pairs a Pilot and their Unit in one connected illustration, plus the game’s first SP Card EX Resources.
The early results speak for themselves: within the first ten days of release, Nu Gundam and Strike Freedom combined for over half of all recorded tournament wins — Nu Gundam alone sat at roughly 28% metashare and Strike Freedom close behind at 24%. That’s about as fast as a set has ever taken over the format, and it’s a big part of why this anniversary season feels different from a normal release week.
New Gear Just Dropped for the Anniversary
On August 6, Bandai added three new accessory items tied to the anniversary celebration and the kickoff of BANDAI CARD GAMES Fest 26-27: Official Card Sleeves EX03, an Official Playmat and Card Set featuring Athrun & Cagalli, and Premium Card Collection 02. BANDAI CARD GAMES Fest 26-27 itself is the new competitive season structure Bandai teased earlier this year — it folds in store-level qualifiers for the first time, spanning two seasons and building toward regional finals in Shanghai, Orlando, London, and Tokyo. If you’ve wanted to test the competitive scene, this is the season it gets a lot more accessible at the local level.
The celebration also had a presence on the show floor at PAX West on August 7, giving West Coast players a chance to demo the anniversary set in person — another sign of how much momentum this game has built in just twelve months.
New to Gundam Card Game? Here’s the Quick Version
Every deck is built around your Units (the Mobile Suits) and the Pilots who crew them — pairing the right Pilot with the right Unit is where most of the strategy lives, and it’s exactly what the new Link Rare cards celebrate visually. Resources to play your cards come from a separate Resource Deck rather than your hand, so you’re rarely stuck unable to act. Combat plays out with a Level (Lv) cost system that gates how big a threat you can deploy early versus late. And instead of life totals, you win by breaking through your opponent’s six face-down Shields — a clean, tactile win condition that makes combat math easy to follow even in your first few games.
Looking Ahead: Two New Universal Century Series Join the Fight
Bandai has already confirmed the next booster, Stardust Trails [GD06], for October 30 — and it’s a big one for classic Gundam fans. The set introduces Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ and Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory to the card game for the first time ever, timed to their 40th and 35th anniversaries respectively in 2026.
That’s two entirely new Universal Century eras entering the format on top of a metagame that’s already being reshaped by Freedom Ascension — which means the next few months are shaping up to be one of the most active stretches the game has had since launch.
