Mill it, then bring it all back. This week’s Deck Tech Tuesday breakdown from the Mana Riot Games team.
Overview
Standard right now is a race between hyper-fast Izzet spell decks and grindy midrange piles, and Sultai Reanimator answers both by playing a completely different game: it turns the graveyard into a second hand. You spend the early turns milling yourself, chip in some value, and then detonate with Bringer of the Last Gift — an eight-mana Vampire Demon that sacrifices every other creature on the board and returns every creature card in your graveyard to the battlefield at once. In a single trigger you can go from behind to an unbeatable board.
What makes the deck a real player in the current meta — a top-8 Challenge finish and a stack of 5-0 league runs this week — is that it doesn’t rely on the Bringer haymaker. Overlord of the Balemurk, Superior Spider-Man, and Ardyn, the Usurper all give you reanimation-flavored value on their own, while Oblivious Bookworm, Formidable Speaker, and Ouroboroid fill the yard and grind card advantage. You have a fair game plan and a broken one, and you get to pick which the matchup calls for. This is a UBG (Sultai) build for MTG Arena Standard.

Strategy Guide
Early game (turns 1–3): load the yard. Your opening turns are about self-mill and setup, not pressure. Town Greeter mills four and fixes your land drops; Rapid Rescue mills two, buys back a permanent, and gains life; Oblivious Bookworm turns every end step into a loot. Commune with Beavers and Dredger’s Insight dig for the piece you’re missing. Don’t be afraid to pitch a fatty to the graveyard — that’s ammunition, not a loss. Deep-Cavern Bat out of the board is your best early interaction against combo and aggro.
Mid game (turns 4–6): grind and build the payoff. This is where Overlord of the Balemurk shines — cast for its impending cost as early as turn 3, it mills four and rebuys a creature every time it enters or attacks, refilling your hand while stocking the yard. Formidable Speaker tutors up whichever payoff the game needs, and Superior Spider-Man can enter as a copy of anything already in a graveyard — yours or theirs — exiling it in the process, which doubles as removal-adjacent tech against other reanimator and midrange decks.
Late game (turn 6+): the Bringer turn. Once you have a stocked graveyard, Bringer of the Last Gift ends games. Its enter trigger forces everyone to sacrifice all other creatures, then returns all creature cards from graveyards that weren’t sacrificed this way — so you empty the opponent’s board and rebuild yours with everything you’ve milled. Ardyn, the Usurper is the alternate top-end, giving your Demons haste and lifelink and copying graveyard creatures as 5/5 Demons each combat. Either one flips a stalled game in one turn.
Win Conditions & Combos
The primary kill is the Bringer of the Last Gift mass reanimation: sacrifice everything, return your whole graveyard, and swing with a board the opponent can’t match. Because Bringer has flying and brings back your Overlords, Spider-Men, and whatever else you’ve milled, one resolution is usually lethal or close to it.
The secondary engine is Ouroboroid + Formidable Speaker. Ouroboroid puts +1/+1 counters on your team equal to its power each combat, and Formidable Speaker can untap it (or another attacker) for repeated triggers — the board snowballs fast. Ardyn provides a third angle, manufacturing a fresh 5/5 Demon every turn from any graveyard. Against control, Superior Spider-Man and Overlord grind card advantage until you simply have too many threats.
Sideboard Guide
Bring in Strategic Betrayal and Ancient Vendetta against other graveyard decks (Selesnya Ouroboroid, the mirror) and midrange — Betrayal is graveyard hate plus a body, Vendetta is efficient removal. Deep-Cavern Bat and additional disruption come in against Izzet Prowess and combo to slow their fastest draws. Wistfulness and Leatherhead, Swamp Stalker give you resilient threats against removal-heavy control. Trim Ouroboroid and a Town Greeter on the draw against aggro where you need interaction over engine pieces; trim excess mill against decks that punish a full graveyard.
Budget Notes
As a tabletop build this list runs roughly $400–430, with the mythic payoffs (Bringer of the Last Gift, Ardyn, the Usurper) and the dual-land manabase carrying most of the cost. On MTG Arena it’s a mid-range wildcard investment concentrated in the rare/mythic threats. Functional budget swaps: swap Ardyn for an extra Overlord of the Balemurk to keep the value plan without the haymaker; cut Cavern of Souls for basics plus Starting Town; trade Ouroboroid for more Town Greeter/Formidable Speaker to lean fully into reanimation; and replace premium duals with tapped dual lands. You keep the core loop — mill, then Bringer/Overlord — while shaving the most expensive slots.
