A mono-menace Rakdos EDH build that turns every drop of your opponents' life into cards and counters

Overview

Some commanders reward you for going wide, some for going tall. Valgavoth, Harrower of Souls rewards you for the one thing your opponents can never fully avoid: losing life. This {2}{B}{R} Elder Demon flies, carries Ward—Pay 2 life, and here's the engine that makes the whole 99 sing — the first time each opponent loses life on their turn, Valgavoth grows with a +1/+1 counter and you draw a card. Three opponents means up to three cards a turn cycle just for existing. Wire the board with pingers, symmetric burn, and life-drain enchantments and Valgavoth doesn't just close games, he refuels you the entire way there.

This is a Rakdos (black-red) punisher deck at heart. We're not trying to durdle — we're building an environment where every action an opponent takes bleeds them, and every drop of blood turns into gas for us. Blood Artist and Bastion of Remembrance make combat and sweepers hurt. Underworld Dreams and Fate Unraveler tax card draw. Sanguine Bond plus Exquisite Blood is a literal 'you lose' button. And the whole time, Valgavoth is quietly getting enormous and keeping your hand full.

Strategy Guide

Early game (turns 1–3). Turns 1–3 are about mana and a clean landing. Lead on Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, or a signet and prioritize getting to four mana on curve so Valgavoth lands early. Dark Ritual can jump him out a turn ahead. Don't be shy about holding up Infernal Grasp or Go for the Throat — you want Valgavoth sticking, and Ward—Pay 2 life already taxes the first removal spell. Card-advantage rocks like Night's Whisper and Read the Bones smooth your draws; the small life cost is almost thematic here.

Mid game (turns 4–6). Turns 4–6 are where the engine turns on. Once Valgavoth resolves, deploy a life-loss enabler before you pass: a Blood Artist effect, Underworld Dreams, or a pinger like Ojer Axonil or Syr Konrad. Now every opponent's fetchland crack, painland, shockland, or Phyrexian mana payment triggers Valgavoth on their turn — counter, card, repeat. Sweepers do double duty: Blasphemous Act or Toxic Deluge with a Blood Artist on board drains the table and draws you a wall of cards as each opponent takes their first hit. Protect the general with Lightning Greaves or Swiftfoot Boots before you tap out.

Late game (turns 7+). By turns 7+ Valgavoth is a hasty-if-equipped, evasive threat that's often 8/8 or larger and demands an answer every turn. Close with commander damage in the air, or pivot to the drain plan. Torment of Hailfire and Exsanguinate turn excess mana into lethal life loss across the table. If you've assembled Sanguine Bond (or Bloodchief Ascension) alongside Exquisite Blood, a single trigger loops into an instant win. Wound Reflection doubles every point of damage you're already dealing — often that's just game over on the next combat.

Win Conditions & Combos

  • Sanguine Bond + Exquisite Blood — The classic Rakdos two-card kill. Any life loss an opponent takes drains 1, which gains you 1, which drains them 1 — an infinite loop that empties the whole table. Valgavoth draws you into the halves and each drain point triggers him along the way.
  • Commander damage in the air — Flying plus a steady diet of +1/+1 counters means Valgavoth outgrows the table fast. Ward—Pay 2 life makes removal awkward, and 21 in the air arrives quicker than people expect — especially with Whip of Erebos giving lifelink or Shadowspear-style trample.
  • Symmetric burn + Blood Artist drain — Blasphemous Act, Toxic Deluge, or Meathook Massacre with Blood Artist / Bastion of Remembrance on board can wipe boards and drain 6–12 life across the table in one shot — while refilling your hand as each opponent takes their first hit.
  • Torment of Hailfire / Exsanguinate — Your mana sink and reach. X-spells that force repeated life loss are backbreaking with Valgavoth (draws) and lethal with Wound Reflection (doubling).

Budget Notes

A tuned build like this lands roughly in the $250–$350 range at retail, with Sheoldred, the Apocalypse, Wheel-tier card advantage, the dual lands, and premium removal doing most of the damage to your wallet. The good news: the core engine is cheap. Blood Artist effects, Underworld Dreams, and the Sanguine Bond package are all budget staples, and Valgavoth himself is an affordable Commander-set reprint. Here are functional swaps to bring the price down without gutting the deck:

  • Cut Sheoldred, the Apocalypse (~$60) → Fate Unraveler + Underworld Dreams already cover the 'punish their draws' angle for a few dollars.
  • Cut Cabal Coffers (~$40) → Run an extra Swamp plus Ash Barrens — the deck isn't hyper-greedy on mana.
  • Cut Premium duals (Blood Crypt, etc.) → Lean on the tapland cycle already in the list (Bloodfell Caves, Canyon Slough) and more basics.
  • Cut Demonic Tutor (~$25) → Diabolic Tutor or Grim Tutor gets there a turn slower for a fraction of the price.
  • Cut Toxic Deluge (~$25) → Bontu's Last Reckoning or Crux of Fate are budget board wipes in-color.

[HOOK – 0:00–0:05] "This Commander literally draws you a card every time your opponents take damage. Meet Valgavoth."

[0:05–0:15] Card 1 — Valgavoth, Harrower of Souls: flying, ward, and the first time each opponent loses life on their turn, he grows and you draw. Three opponents, three cards.

[0:15–0:25] Card 2 — Blood Artist: now every creature that dies drains the table. Every drain is a Valgavoth trigger.

[0:25–0:35] Card 3 — Blasphemous Act: one red mana, wrath the board, drain everyone, and draw a fistful off Valgavoth.

[0:35–0:45] Card 4 — Sanguine Bond + Exquisite Blood: the two-card combo that ends the game on the spot.

[0:45–0:55] Card 5 — Torment of Hailfire: dump your mana, force massive life loss, close it out.
