Overview

Witherbloom, the Balancer is the #1 trending commander on EDHREC this month. This Golgari Elder Dragon gives ALL of your instant and sorcery spells Affinity for creatures, on top of having affinity itself. The more bodies you control, the cheaper your whole deck becomes — flood the board with tokens and dorks, then fire off a one-mana Torment of Hailfire or a free Exsanguinate to drain the table to zero.

It is a flying, deathtouch six-drop that routinely costs three or four mana the turn you cast it, rewarding the classic Witherbloom plan of small creatures, life drain, and big payoff spells.

Strategy Guide

Early (turns 1-3). Mulligan toward a mana dork and a token producer. Turn-one Llanowar Elves into turn-two Bitterblossom, Cryptolith Rite, or Sol Ring sets up explosive turns. Board presence beats holding interaction this early.

Mid (turns 4-6). Deploy Witherbloom — with four or five creatures out it often costs 1-2 mana, and now your whole spellbook has affinity too. Tendershoot Dryad, Scute Swarm, and Chatterfang build the token engine; Parallel Lives / Doubling Season double it.

Late (turns 7+). A massive Torment of Hailfire or Exsanguinate drains the table; Craterhoof Behemoth or Finale of Devastation closes in one swing. Beledros Witherbloom untaps for a second drain.

Win Conditions & Combos

  • Affinity X-spell finish — a wide board makes Exsanguinate / Torment of Hailfire effectively free.
  • Craterhoof / Finale overrun — alpha-strike with a buffed army.
  • Bitterblossom + Bastion of Remembrance / Mirkwood Bats — constant drain.
